In social studies the fifth grade has been studying about early colonies to settle the new world. We looked at Roanoke colony known as the lost colony which was unsuccessful and we actually don't know what really happened to them. We looked at Jamestown and the struggles they went through, they chose a place with swampy land and salty water. Many of the early colonist that came were unwilling to do the work that needed to be done to keep the colony strong, they wanted to search for riches. We studied the Pilgrims who only brought about 100 colonist and landed in the new world in late fall, the wrong time of year to plant crops and they lost have their people that first winter. They did have good relationship with the Native Americans in the area and they helped them learn how to survive in a new land. The students are using the information they have learned to help them make the right choices to make their colony successful. The students today finished choosing how many people and what supplies to bring with them. They divided the people and supplies between three ships and we will set sail tomorrow. With some luck all the groups will make it there, but one does not know what fate will bring. Stay tooned to here what happens to our colonists.
