In science the Fifth Graders have been working hard with our current Einstein kit Microworlds. In this kit students are learning how to use different tools to help them make observations. We first started out trying to draw a penny and quickly realized that it was hard to do from memory. When students were able to use a hand lens it was much easier and they could then see more details. We discovered what qualities a magnifier needed to have to make things larger. (needs to be transparent and curved). The students then moved on to looking even closer at items using a microscope. They had to learn how to adjust the focuse and the amount of kight to beat see the slide. The students are now applying what they have learned to observe living organisms. To day we observed blepharisma, a rosey colored single cell organism, come check them out at open house. During the first week of school the students where given a challenge, they needed to save Fred. Fred (a worm) went sailing but did not put on his life vest. His boat flips over and the life vest ends up under the boat. Students had to figure out how to get the life vest on Fred without using their hands, the only thing they could use to touch Fred, the boat or life vest was paper clips. Many thought this was impossible but with a little thought all were able to save him. We had perfect weather for our walk this year. The kids had a great time walking through the community and getting their steps in for the day. Thank youvto all the parents that came and walked with us.On the first day of school we went over a few activites we will be using throughout the year. The first was a grouping actuvity where each student picked a card and then when given the signal had to act like the farm animal till they found their partner. After they found a partner, students participated in a gallery walk. Students walked around the room to different stations, this time they had questions to answer indicidually but some times they will have to work in a group to solve problems, of reseach information. We are on our last Einstein kit of the year, Food Chemistry. In this unit students will learn how to conduct 4 different tests to find out if the food contains that nutrient. Students are also learning the importance of following procedure to prevent cross contamination and the use of a control test to compare their results to. We have so far learned how to test for starch and glucose. In phy ed students were rotating around the playground trying to make a basket in different ways. One was to take a hula hoop and loop it around the basket. Not as easy as you would think!
In reading we are studying about nonfiction text. We started by first taking a look at all the different features that can be found in nonfiction texts and how they help the reader understand the text. Students then created a poster displaying examples of some of the text features and what each feature means.
To celebrate presidents day students created child size president posters. Student pairs had to select a president and then use resource books to research about the president life. They worked really hard and did a wonderful job. If you get a chance stop in and check them out.
