Everyone's favorite Cake walk was the ending activity for our Catholic Schools week. Thank you to the Home and School organization and the 6th graders for running this event. The 5th graders can't wait till it's there turn to participate in the cake walk next year!

Students had a great time enjoying all the activities and the snow day. Thankfully the weather cooperated and we where avle to go to the Badger Sports Park.
We have started our next Einstein kit Motion and Design. During this kit students will be observing how force affects the morion of our vehicals. In this lab students are investigating how the different amounts of force change how the vehical moves. Students discovered the more force applied the farther the vehical moved.
As a final project for our unit on atoms students where given access to a collection of materials to use to construct a model of an element of their choice. They then completed a sheet explaining about their element.
The third through sixth graders today went to spread some Christmas Cheer to the local nursing homes.
During our latest science lab students conducted mini experiments to determine if there was a chemical reaction or not. We know there is a reaction when something new has been created. WE came up with a list of ways we know there is a reaction: if there is a color change, if there was bubbling, a new compound is formed.
Today in science we arw learning how everything is made up of atoms and that everything is arranged in an orderly pattern. Students used gum drops and tooth picks to modle this. Each student created salt molecules containing sodium and chlorine in a predictable pattern, making a cube shape.
We are workung on our Explorer u it in social studies. This week we are looking at Christopher Columbus. To help students understand the Columbian Exchange students took part in a smells of the new world activity. Students went from cup to cup trying to figure out what each food item was that came from the new world. It was not as easy as it sounds. Students learned that corn, chocolate, chili peppers, peanuts, vanilla and potatoes all came from the new world. Many of these food items helped improve life in Europe. We also learned that there was also a negative effect of this exchange, many new diseases were unintentionally brought to the new world which the Native Americans had little resistance to and many died.
We pasused in our multiplying and divideing fraction unit to review writing fractions, finding their equivalent decimal and naming the percentage in this cute Indian Corn activity. Students were given color suggestions and where asked to color their corn. When they were done they figured out the fraction each color was of the whole corn, the decimal and percentage.
